One of the main objectives of the New Forest HLS Scheme is wetland restoration.
We are aiming to improve the condition of areas of wetland in the New Forest from ‘unfavourable’ to ‘favourable’. These are definitions agreed by the government based on the condition of an area.
The aim of the restoration is to:
- Reduce unnatural erosion
- Encourage the water onto the floodplain during higher rainfall
- Increase overall resilience of the floodplain.
However there are additional benefits to the HLS scheme such as
- Slowing the flow of water to reduce flood risk
- Improve water quality
- Increase carbon storage.
In order to be able to say that the habitat is more favourable than before restoration we are carrying out a scientific monitoring programme.
